Working Efficiently!

WORKING EFFICIENTLY

‘Most urgent decisions are rarely the most important ones’

'BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!
BUT NEVER LATE IS BETTER!!

Whatever workload lands up with you, classify into IMPORTANT (or NOT) / URGENT (or NOT).

US President Dwight D Eisenhower used to follow this model of working efficiently.

Warren Buffet the multimillionaire had a different system of efficiently working.

  • He used to make a list of everything to be done.
  • Begin at the top of the list and finish at the bottom!
  • Cross off when you finish each job!

Though it is easy to procrastinate,

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!
BUT NEVER LATE IS BETTER!!

Exercise and Sudden Death

Exercise and Sudden Death

We exercise to prolong life and to remain fit. Now and then we hear of football players who die on the fields. These are young professionals who train hard and yet they die suddenly on the field.
There is yet another group of middle aged men who train for marathons or lift weights. Frederick Montz, David Nagey, or Jeffrey Williams, three brilliant physicians at Johns Hopkins University who died while running. The oldest of the three was 51.
One of the things on my bucket list was to run a marathon which I trained and did when I was 50 years of age. I ran 2 others before my wife put an end to it by saying it was going to kill me one of these days.
Thomas Bassler, M.D., went so far as to say that anyone who could finish a marathon in less than 4 hours could not have serious heart problems. He conducted a study on 14 marathoners who had died of cardiovascular disease, and concluded that all were malnourished.
Marathon runners are fit guys who have to exercise regularly if they need to complete in 4 hours. But now no one believes that endurance training confers immunity.
"I think the risk is inescapable, and it's bigger than we're letting on," says Paul Thompson, M.D., director of preventive cardiology at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut and a researcher who studies sudden death and exercise.
Dr. Thompson's studies showed that 10 percent of the heart attacks treated were exercise related. "Those heart attacks tend to be in people who aren't fit," he says. "But that doesn't mean that's the only group that gets it, unfortunately. There are these very fit guys who go out for a run and drop dead
According to an often-cited 1982 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine:
·         One death per 17,000 men who exercise vigorously 1 to 19 minutes a week
·         One death per 23,000 men who exercise vigorously 20 to 139 minutes a week
·         One death per 13,000 men who exercise vigorously 140 or more minutes a week
·         Regular exercise reduces the risk of sudden death in persons with latent coronary artery disease; but increases the risk of sudden death during exercise for those with heart disease that predisposes to sudden death
Heart diseases  with exercise associated sudden death are coronary artery disease and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Less common cardiac disorders leading to sudden death in athletes include anomalous origin of the coronary arteries, aortic rupture associated with Marfan's syndrome, myocarditis, mitral valve prolapse and various arrhythmias.
"The person who's at greatest risk of an exercise death is the person with known or hidden coronary artery disease who is habitually sedentary all year round," says Franklin.
You don't need to turn into a marathoner. But you should work out frequently; many studies have shown that the overall amount of time you spend up and moving matters is worth it.
Some endurance exercise is fine, if you like it. Strength training is probably more than fine ; it specifically prepares your body for the shock of sudden, strenuous exertion which is most likely to kill you if your body isn't ready for it.
But any time you exercise strenuously, on the road or in the squat rack, you're taking on a small risk of a big problem. "It's like investing in the stock market," says Dr. Thompson. "You're putting your money down, looking for a long-term gain. But you could put your money in WorldCom and lose it all. There's a risk to everything."

On Recent Tamil Movies… !

On Recent Tamil Movies… !

I have never been an avid fan of  Tamil movies – lengthy shows, highly choreographed dancing to loud numbers around trees, corny dialogues, fight sequences where the heroes always win the fight and the women, calamity comedies and totally socially anticipated endings!

English movies on the other hand ………..

Recently due to pressure of time – only after 10 pm, our family (who prefer Tamil movies and far outnumber me!) outings in Coimbatore appear to favour movies in Fun City Mall!

A host of recent Tamil movies has really impressed me. Of late, movies appear to have a simple story content, creative young directors, small time but talented actors and no long songs!

There is an intent to keep a shoe string budget, as the directors and money strapped producers employ a host of average looking heroines; pock marked, common looking, insipid heroes with dark complexion who can effectively deliver the message.

Modern India has changed a lot as one learns from the newspapers and TV shows such as ‘Saudhaan episodes’ on ‘Life is OK’ Channel. One learns much from these true police episodes …..that life is not that rosy, people are not that polite, crime is not that uncommon, dowry system still exists, woman is still at risk at nights on the road, the average blind beggar on the road has most probably been made blind by beggar mafia, the abundant greed of humanity, that woman is not that gullible, that man is not always the oppressor ( but converse is more common), girl child is still not wanted in many parts of the nation, caste system raises its ugly head everywhere, the con man uses the greed of the common man and what not.

The modern cinema opens the can of worms in the open and the young directors depict them in a direct way!

I have had no training in movies but I cannot but notice the change in Tamil movies – like a breath of fresh air.

I have outlined 4 recent movies ( I watched two during a bus journey!) which were by no means, a box office hit – but made an impression on me.... a non-movie going, average, non-artistic person!

1.Dharmadurai

The story involves around Madurai Medical College graduate, an average rural MBBS doctor at that, a love between different status, dowry evils, suicide of a self-made village lass. I liked the role of the heroine, a village girl who makes a mark with her writing in magazines for a small fee; and the educated female sub inspector – a family friend of the heroine – who tells her family that she knows the hero is at fault in the suicide of the heroine and she will lock him up by any means required.

A lot of honesty and bravado for the woman power in the average Indian village set up! Definitely enhanced woman empowerment! And finally how the hero meets his old classmates and how they stand up for him despite their previous enmity during college days – that is what old classmates do!

2. Saduranga Vettai

The story of a con man who uses the greed of the average common man to make money, which he is able to defend even in a court of law. It involves true past events in South India like the sand snakes increasing sexual stamina, the emu – bird scam, ‘rice – pulling’ conning , the 50% off gold schemes, and what not! The movie pointed out that so long the common man is greedy and wants ‘quick money’, he is going to be taken for a ride! …. In a humorous way!

3. Appa

It depicted the social evils of how we are spoiling the next generation and losing them to a life of competition, winning at any cost, rising suicides among students due to peer and parent pressure . A lesson for us all!

The tuition centres which only imprison the children with the sole aim of getting the highest marks are the target of the story. The owners of such institutions along with their hospital doctors appear to withhold information of a dead little boy saying he is still alive. Only to be told the truth by some other doctors who cannot watch the agony of the parents!

4. Kutrame Thandanai

A Tamil movie without songs with music by Ilayaraja!! About a guy with 'tunnel vision' – apparently a witness to a crime who keeps changing his story, to blackmail 2 suspects of a murder! The story telling is simple, superb with wry jokes –from a police constable. Problems of a visually challenged person, changing morals in young women who only wish to marry for money and not for love, the  money power of the rich over the poor to alter police statements, honesty of the police inspector, dishonesty of corporate hospital administration which makes its doctors advice eye transplantation for a glaucoma condition with no such treatment, how money is collected in increasing fashion by big hospitals depending on the urgency of patients; and finally and most importantly how you should never underestimate the prowess of anyone in life – handicapped or not!

Kudos to these young directors and actors who manage to deliver these social messages to the public so directly despite constraints of budget and expectations!

Listen, incidentally I am not against high budget movies! They have their messages too , but tend to get lost in the glitter, glamour and the much anticipated action!

Enjoyed Kabali immensely.

The part I loved most (which was repeatedly shown in every trailer) in Kabali was – the book superstar Rajini Kanth was reading in jail- MY FATHER BALAIAH – by Satyanarayanan. In the book, 50 acres of land issued by the king to a Dalit is taken away by the high caste landlord. The Dalit and his poor family are threatened, his women leered  and finally made to leave with his dead wife on his shoulders and a child son walking away from the village. This Dalit father single mindedly educates his children with the help of the British and Anglo Indians and gets them jobs in railways on par with the non Dalits. A moving, soul-stirring true life story of the caste system!

This powerful book is the essence of the movie. Social message concerns Dalits and non Dalits caste system, which exists in India even now! I bought and read the book since the movie. If only we followed the lessons learnt in the book, …...........

Enough ranting… now back to work!

TO BE OR NOT TO BE a Coffee Drinker!

TO BE OR NOT TO BE  a Coffee Drinker!

My wife often says I am drinking too much coffee! So I got to wondering if this is good or bad for me.

Starting facts have been revealed to me which I am sure you’d like to hear if you are a coffee lover too.

Firstly, what is coffee?

Coffee is made by roasting seeds from Coffea plants.

These plants initially in Africa and Southern Asia are now grown all over the equatorial region.

Coffee drinking started in the 15 th century in the Sufi of Yemen. Then travelled to Arabia, Persia, Turkey and finally to Europe and the rest of the world.

What are the nutrients in coffee?

Coffee has vitamins (B2, B5, B1, B3), Folate, Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus.

It also has a high concentration of antioxidants. Antioxidants help to prevent cancer!

Most importantly it has caffeine at an average of 90-100 mg per cup.

Caffeine is a brain stimulant. By blocking adenosine, it increases activity of the brain and releases noradrenaline and dopamine. These make us more alert. So there is improved mood, quicker response time and increased level of alertness.

Caffeine also increases body metabolism, but most of these actions get tolerant when coffee is drunk on a long term basis and the effects are not so pronounced!

How does coffee prevent or delay diseases? In other words, what is the good news with coffee?

1.Alzheimer’s disease which causes forgetfulness and dementia in the elderly is delayed 65% in coffee drinkers.

2.Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease and coffee drinking brings the risk down by 32-60%

3.Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus may be protected by coffee drinking . Plasma levels of of Sex Hormone- Binding Globulins (SHBG) appear to have a role in development of type 2 diabetes. These are altered to protect against the development of diabetes (Harvard School of Public Health).

4.Liver Cancer - the risk of liver cancer is lowered by about 40% if one drinks 3 cups of coffee a day ( Italian Study).

5.Liver diseases such as primary sclerosing cholangitis and cirrhosis are reduced by 22% in coffee drinkers (USA study). Drinking decaf coffee also lowers liver enzyme levels.

6.Cardiac health - Beth Israel and Harvard School of Public Health concluded that coffee in moderation (2 European cups or two 8-ounce American servings) per day protects against heart failure.

7.Prevention of premature death - MNT news revealed that 4-5 cups daily reduced the risk of early death - even in those who drink decaf.

8.Multiple sclerosis ( Brain and nervous demyelinating disorder) risks are lowered by coffee.

9.Depression and suicides are reduced by 20 % and 53% by coffee drinking in Harvard study, 2011.

10.Longer life in coffee drinkers (4-5 cups per day) published in New England Journal of Medicine, 2012.

What then are the bad things about coffee?

In some folks, it causes anxiety, palpitations and panic attacks.

Loss of sleep is well known. Best avoided after 2 pm.

Coffee may  increase urination and to some extent the blood pressure by 1-2 mm Hg.

Tolerance ( tendency for coffee not to have any action and so need to increase dose) and addiction to coffee can post a problem.

Who are the folks who should avoid coffee in large amounts?

The pregnant, the anxious, hypertensive ( high BP), insomniacs and the highly strung best avoid excess coffee.

How to use coffee to aid the health?

Avoid sugar, excess milk, artificial cream or artificial sweetening agents .

I usually take 5-6 cups of coffee a day…. and enjoy it !

And I hope my wife gets to read my blog!
